More and more accounting firms are hiring based on interviews done via video communication rather than interviewing potential candidates in person. Since fall is the prime hiring season within the accounting profession, we want to help you feel prepared for this now-popular type of interview. Career service offices train interviewees on how to excel in an office interview; however, with those going out the door, some new tips and tricks may be helpful.
Technical Aspects
One of the first things to do is to make sure you test your equipment and surroundings ahead of time. If possible, set-up a short video test call with a family member or friend to see if you have:
- A solid internet connection
- Good lighting and sound
- A neutral, professional backdrop
Discuss with them afterward what worked well, what didn’t, and ways to improve the quality of your interview, and if lighting or sound are issues, consider investing in a ring light or lavalier microphone.
Also, you should plan to make sure there won’t be any distractions while interviewing. For example, if you have a dog, make sure he will be far enough away so your interviewer(s) won’t hear him if he decides to bark.
Similarly, communicate with anyone you are living with so they know not to come into your room, yell, or otherwise be disruptive during your interview. And, finally, turn off notifications from your laptop, phone, or any other devices, while making sure your computer is fully charged and plugged in.
Etiquette
Some aspects of interview etiquette remain the same, such as:
- Dressing professionally and combing your hair – professional appearance
- Sitting up straight
- Making good eye contact and smiling
- Speaking clearly and not too quickly
Make sure to have your computer at eye level or slightly higher than eye level to imitate an in-person interview.
Finally, prepare for this interview as much as you normally would for a job and company you are interested in: research the company, practice answering common questions, and prepare questions to ask in return. Be engaged and show your interest during the interview process, and it will be evident you’re the right candidate for the job!
